Four Ocean Zones
Scroll down for all the study guide information.
Scientists divide the ocean into zones based on things such as
water depth,
the amount of sunlight, and
water temperature.
Intertidal Zone:
Where the ocean meets the shore
Organisms are covered with water at high tide and exposed to air at low tide
Organisms include
Sea grasses
periwinkle snails
herons
sea stars
anemones
clams
crabs
snails
and conch
Neritic Zone:
Located further from the shore
water becomes deeper
ocean floor starts to slope downward
water is warmer than deep ocen water
receives a lot of sunlight
Organisms include
phytoplankton are the major producers
seaweeds are common
corals and sponges
sea turtles
dolphins
sea urchins
large variety of colorful fishes
Oceanic Zone:
The sea floor drops off quickly
This zone extends from the surface to the deep water of the open ocean
Organisms include
phytoplankton (near the surface)
many varities of fishes
whales
sharks
squid
jelly fish
Benthic Zone:
This is the ocean floor
Gets no sunlight
Very cold
Organisms include
fishes
worms
crabs
bacteria
sea urchins
